“An unavoidable legacy of industrial activity are the toxic substances that are produced.  In many cases the dangers associated with these substances were not properly understood at the time they were produced or used, and only after a number of years or even decades have their dangers been fully understood.

This edition called Cleaning Up Canada examines some of those toxic wastes and the sites where they have been located.  It reports on the successes some firms and government agencies have achieved in dealing with these dangerous situations.  In other cases, the magazine identifies some sites where for a variety of reasons, little progress has occurred even though the problem has been known for a long time and viable remediation solutions exist.

This first edition of Cleaning Up Canada will focus on the western provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.  A national edition is planned for a second stage depending on interest in the first edition.

Suggestions for story material and ideas from freelance writers and environmental groups, industry and government are welcomed.   Publication is planned for late 2008 or early 2009.”
